Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos Dust

(NIOSH 582 Equivalent Course)



NIOSH 582 equivalent course for the microscopical identification of airborne asbestos fibers. Meets mandatory training requirements specified in AHERA, OSHA and the State of Florida.

State-of-the-art presentation featuring multimedia projector, PowerPoint presentations and asbestos-related movies. All equipment, materials and supplies are provided by Air Analytics. There is no need to bring your own microscope. (You may bring it if you would like to learn to adjust and use your own). We feature NIKON and Olympus PCM microscopes.

Students learn methods for the collection and quantitation of ambient air samples and personnel exposure. Students must pass the written final exam, complete in-class practical projects and quizzes, evaluate the required number of samples; and demonstrate proficiency in microscope alignment, calibration, and use. Class meets from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Refreshments are provided.

  • Aggressive air sampling.
  • Physics review: Properties of light, lenses & microscopes.
  • Components of PCM microscope.
  • Sample analysis.
  • Statistics, fiber concentration formulas.
  • Sampling and calibrating equipment.
  • Sampling and counting procedures

Who Should Attend

Microscopists, air sampling technicians, and industrial hygienists whose jobs include sampling and analyzing for asbestos fibers, fiberglass and man-made mineral fibers will benefit most from this course. A good background in basic algebra and the ability to use a calculator with square and square-root functions is essential.

Registration Information

Course tuition is $895.00. Tuition includes course manual, handouts, scientific calculator, snack and beverage breaks.

Registration is limited to 12 participants. Advanced registration is required and accepted in the order received. We accept payment by checks, Visa, MasterCard, AMEX and Discover.

Air Analytics may cancel courses as necessary (although we have never cancelled a course). Our cancellation policy -- cancellations must be in writing. Refunds, minus a $50 cancellation fee, will be issued up to one week before the day of the course; after that, tuition fees are forfeited. Participant substitutions are permitted with 48-hour notice.
